It’s just how you are

Stand offish
And a little to the side
Close enough to touch
Far enough to hide
We float around
In the world according to you
Hot or cold on your whim
Always too cold
Too cold to swim
The closer I get to where you are
The further you get from where you were
You keep me from starving
But I am always hungry
Hungry for a touch
Not the compulsory cue
For the obligatory release
But an absent minded touch
Provoked by restless affection
Hungry for a smile
Not the sardonic curve of lips
Rather a glint in the eyes
A sign that maybe you enjoy me
I’m hungry for intimacy
If you would try me on
You’d see that I fit well
I can fill in the cracks and gaps
I can be the moon in your night
When your bones are bleary
And your eyes are weary
I can be your feet
My soul could be your home
If you’d just try me on
I could be your perfect fit
But as we are right now
I’m starving right before you
My bones are turning brittle
And my heart is dimming
Little by little
I’m wasting away from want
Want of just a little love
